On 5 April 2007, the Sea Diamond, a cruise ship owned by the Cyprus company, LOUIS Hellenic Cruises, sank in the caldera. According to the scientists, the wreck must be salvaged and removed as soon as possible, as it poses a serious threat to the island's natural environment.
According to the Greek Laws and the European Union regulations, the ship should have already been salvaged. However, neither Louis Cruises, the ship’s company, nor the Greek government have shown the necessary will to act.
